Meet report: GSC finish off 2013 in fine style at the Connacht SC Championships
This was a great meet for GSC and a really positive gala for all our competing swimmers who took their performances to the next level – a brilliant finish to the first term of swimming at the club.
The Connacht Short Course Championships were held in Leisureland on 14th and 15th December and GSC swimmers made 186 PB’s from 210 swims with an 88.57% return improvement.
Our swimmers won 20 gold medals, 23 silvers and 10 bronze medals and broke several Connacht records over the two day event.
GSC’s senior swimmers broke five junior and two senior records with David O’Sullivan breaking an U19 and a senior record in his 50m fly performance.
GSC swimmers put in super performances. In the U14 boys category, Mitchell Wilson took gold in the 200IM and also swam to a gold medal finish in the 15 and over 200m butterfly event. He also claimed four silver medals in the U14 50m breaststroke, the 100IM, the 50m fly and the 200m free events and added a bronze in the 50m freestyle.
Cian Duffy and Ruth Keogh claimed gold in the 15 and over boys and girls 200IM event. Ruth won gold again in the 15 and over 1500m freestyle while Cian went on to swim to a bronze medal finish in the 50m butterfly.
There were two gold medal wins for Kevin McGlade over the weekend with a win in the 15 and over 50m freestyle and the 100IM and a silver medal swim in the 50m butterfly.
David O’Sullivan won two golds for Galway with a win in the boys 15 and over 1500m freestyle and the 50m butterfly while Bryan O’Sullivan took gold in the 200 Backstroke, 400IM and 50m backstroke and silver in the boys 15 and over 1500m freestyle.
There was gold for Sarah Jane Fox in the 15 and over girls 50m fly and bronze medal performances in the 200m backstroke and the 100IM while Kate Kavanagh claimed gold in the 15 and over 50m backstroke. There was another gold for Galway when Keena Walsh won the girls 15 and over 800m freestyle with further winning performances from Keena who won a silver in the 200m butterfly and a bronze in the 50m breaststroke.
Galway added to the gold medal tally with a win for Daniel Scully in the boys 15 and over 800m freestyle.
More success came from Andrew Moore, with a silver medal in the 15 and over boys 400m freestyle, with Conor Smyth winning bronze in the same event. Conor won silver in the over 15 200m freestyle event while Andrew added a further two bronze medal wins in the 50m butterfly and the 50m backstroke. Kate Finn won three silvers in the 50m and 200m freestyle and the 50m backstroke, while Niamh Melody took silver in the 200m backstroke.
There was further success in the U14 category, with Fionn Duffy claiming silver in the 400IM and the 200m butterfly. Max Kolcow claimed bronze in the 200IM and the 200m fly while Tim Keogh swam to a bronze medal finish in the 1500m freestyle event.
The relay races brought more medals for GSC with a gold for the boys 15 and over freestyle relay team of Cian Duffy, Conor Smyth, Daniel Scully and Kevin McGlade.
There was a silver medal win for the boys 14 and under relay team of Fionn Duffy, Max Kolcow, Tim Keogh and Mitchell Wilson in the 200m freestyle relay, with all four boys going on to win another silver in the 200 medley event. There was another silver for the boys 15 and over team of Cian Duffy, Kevin McGlade, Conor Smyth and Niall McCarrra with a great relay swim.
There were also Connacht records from several relay races.
Congratulations to the GSC Senior Girls Medley team of Niamh Melody, Keena Walsh, Kate Finn and Dairne Ryan who broke the Connacht senior record swimming to win the 4×50 Medley relay whilst U17 girls medley relay team of Kate Kavanagh, Alex McFarland, Sarah Jane Fox and Ruth Keogh who took silver in the event & broke the U17 Connacht record & claimed silver.
The GSC Girls U17 freestyle relay team also broke a second Connacht record: Congratulations to Kate Finn, Alex McFarland, Kate Kavanagh and Ruth Keogh for their gold medal finish in the event and GSC girls senior team made up Dairne Ryan, Sarah Jane Fox & Keena Walsh finished a close second winning silver.
The boys relay teams broke two Connacht records:
Congratulations to the boys 15 and over medley relay team of Bryan O’Sullivan, Andrew Moore, David O’Sullivan and Conor Snowdon who won gold for GSC while breaking the Connacht record, the same four boys broke another Connacht record in the freestyle relay winning silver at the event. While the GSC Senior Boys team made up of Cian Duffy, Conor Smyth, Daniel Scully & Kevin McGlade won Gold in the 4×50 Freestyle relay & in the 4×50 Medley relay event, Niall McCarra replaced Daniel Scully & finished second behind the Junior team in two very exciting races.
