GSC excel at the Connacht Age-Groups
GSC’s swimmers made a massive step forward in their preparations for the National meets in June and July with stellar performances at the Connacht Age Groups, held in UL on the 16th and 17th May.
Combining this year’s Connacht Age-groups with the Munster Age-Groups brought a real competitive edge to the racing which added to the improved performances of the swimmers across the board.
Our swimmers got 101 PBs over the weekend, winning 25 gold medals, 18 silvers and 13 bronzes with special mention for Max Kolcow who at 12 years old, was swimming two years out of age (i.e. U14) and got Connacht Squad times in the 100m & 200m freestyle in two superb swims.
In the first event of the day, GSC swimmers started out strong with a host of medals in the 400m freestyle.
There were gold medal performances from Mitchell Wilson (U15), Sophie Moran (U12) and Max Kolcow (U13). Four GSC swimmers took silver in the event: Fionn Duffy (U13), Bryan O’Sullivan (U16), Kate Kavanagh (16) and Grace Kavanagh (U10) while Kate Finn (U16) and Alison Gibbs (U10) took home two bronze medals.
Kate Kavanagh, Sophie Moran and Max Kolcow added another gold medal each with strong finishes in the 100m backstroke event, with Bryan O’Sullivan and Grace Kavanagh adding to their success with silver medals in their backstroke races. Isabelle Gibbs (U12) swam to a silver medal finish in the event while Tom O’Sullivan won bronze in the U11 event.
There were strong performances in the 200IM event from Mitchell Wilson, Sophie Moran, Max Kolcow and Alison Gibbs (U10) who won gold in their events with Fionn Duffy picking up a bronze in the U13 category.
In the 100m fly, GSC had a host of winning swimmers. There were golds for Sarah Jane Fox and Andrew Moore in the U16 event and Max Kolcow in his U14 event. More success came for Fionn Duffy, Bryan O’Sullivan, Mitchell Wilson, Keela Mulhall (U12) and David Doorly (U11) swimming to silver medal finishes, with a bronze for Roisin Finn (U14) while Tom O’Sullvan added a bronze in his event.
Sophie and Max’s gold medal winning streak continued in the 200m backstroke, with a gold medal win for Daniel Scully in the U17 category. Grace Kavanagh, Allanah Blacoe (U12) and Cillian Blacoe (U13) picked up a bronze medal each in the racing.
There were a further two golds for Max and Sophie in the 200m freestyle with a silver for Fionn Duffy and David Doorly and a bronze for Joseph Doorly in the U13 event.
Winning his 7th gold medal of the day in the 100m freestyle, Max Kolcow also qualified for a place in the Connacht squad with a time of 1.00.21 with a silver medal for Keela Mullhall in the U12 event.
GSC won another two medals in the 200m breaststroke, with a gold for Sophie Moran and a bronze for Fionn Duffy. Fionn added to his medals with a gold medal performance in the 200m butterfly with Tom O’Sullivan winning gold in the U10 age group. There was a silver medal for Zak Rather in the U13 age group while David Doorly picked up a bronze in the U11 event.
Ending both days with relays, GSC added a host of medals with three gold medal performances from the U14 girls and the U18 girls and boys teams.
Congratulations to the U14 girls 4×100 freestyle relay team of Keela Mullhall, Roisin Finn, Nell Mahdi and Sophie Moran and the U18 team of Kate Kavanagh, Alex McFarland, Sarah Jane Fox and Kate Finn and the U18 boys team of Andrew Moore, Mitchell Wilson, Daniel Scully and Bryan O’Sullivan on their gold medal perfomances.
There was a silver medal win for the U14 girls medley relay team of Sophie Moran, Allanah Blacoe, Roisin Finn and Keela Mullhall while the U15 boys 4×100 relay team of Fionn Duffy, Tim Keogh, Cillian Blacoe and Max Kolcow picked up a bronze medal in their event.
