Galway SC impress at the Irish Division 2’s!
Galway SC swimmers had an excellent start to the National Championships series at the Irish Division 2 championships held in the University Arena, Limerick from Friday 22nd June-Sunday 24th June.
The team of 13 GSC swimmers achieved 65 PB’s, 23 podium finishes, three top three overall awards & 5 new Irish Age-Group qualifiers!
Top girls performances came from Ciara Shaughnessy who won golds in the U12 Girls category winning the 100/200 Backstroke, 200 IM & 200 Freestyle. Ciara also finished 2nd in the 400 Freestyle, achieved 4 Irish Age-Group Q.T’s & finished second in the overall U12 girls performance category. Team mate, Roisin Finn who was also competing in the girls U12 category picked up 2 bronze medals in the 100 & 200 Backstroke, achieved 2 Irish Age-Group Q.T’s & finished third in the overall U12 girls performance category. Ciara & Roisin, were then joined by Lauren & Sinead Walsh (no relation!) & finished third in the both the girls U12 4X50 Medley & Freestyle relays. In the U16 Girls category, Kristiana Hristeva was having an superb meet, winning gold in the 100 Backstroke, finishing second in the 200 Backstroke & 400 IM & won bronze in the 100 Breaststroke.
Not to be undone by the girls, the boys too had fantastic performances at the Division 2’s also & these top boys performances came from Timothy Keogh who won golds in the 200 & 400 IM & won silver in 1500 Freestyle in the U12 boys category. Team mate Joseph Doorly who was also competing in the U12 category, won gold in the 400 Freestyle & finished third in the 100 Freestyle & Joseph also finished third in the boys U12 overall performance category. Adding to the success of Timothy & Joseph, David O’Connor impressed in the U12 100 & 200 Butterfly, winning silver in both events & Harry McGrogan also won a silver medal in the 200 Freestyle. Superb PB performances were also achieved by Aisling Kennelly, Grace Kavanagh, Ruby Murphy & Liam Smyth at the competition also & the boys U12 4X50 relay team made up of Timothy Keogh, Joseph Doorly, David O’Connor & Harrry McGrogan then finished the meet of in exciting style winning silver in the Medley event & gold in the 4X50 Freestyle relay & in doing so brought to an end an excellent meet for the team!
