Coach’s Corner – Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success
Legendary college basketball coach John Wooden believed that success is an equal opportunity player.
He was a legendary US college basketball coach in high school and college for 40 years. His teams won more national championships than anyone before or since.
His Pyramid of Success is a very effective blueprint for life and can teach us a lot about training and success.
The Pyramid of Success, like all pyramids, starts with a strong base. The base of the pyramid begins in the lower left with Hard Work , according to Coach Wooden: “There is no substitute for work. None. Worthwhile things come from real work.”
It continues to rise to the peak – where Wooden places Personal Best as the crowning achievement. He mentions along the way that the wins are not the goal, but just byproducts of success.
According to Wooden, success is built block by block, where each block is a crucial principle contributing to life-long achievement in every area of life.
“Success is piece of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing that you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” — John Wooden
