GSC start the long course season off at the Gerry Ryan Open in positive form…
Congratulations to the Galway SC swimmers who competed at the Gerry Ryan Memorial long course in Limerick on the 1st of February.
Despite squad training being considerably hampered by the closure of Leisureland, the GSC team performed superbly at the club’s first long course training outing of the year.
Attending only the Saturday of the meet, the team made 90 PB swims, with 16 golds won, as well as nine silvers and seven bronzes. This left GSC with a 3rd place finish in the team standings despite only attending the meet on the Saturday!
There were medals all around in the first event of the day, the 200m freestyle, with Ruth Keogh and Cian Duffy winning gold in that event. There were silvers for Sophie Moran and Kate Finn with Mitchell Wilson claiming a bronze in the U15 category.
There was gold for Kevin McGlade in his 50m freestyle event and in the same event, Ruth won a second gold while gaining a British Youths qualification time in the process.
Mitchell Wilson, Keena Walsh and Sophie Moran all swam to a gold medal finish in the 400IM, with silver medals for Andrew Moore and Fionn Duffy and two bronze medals for Zak Rather and Isabelle Gibbs in the same event.
Sophie claimed another place on the podium with her gold medal swim in the 200m backstroke, in a National Youth Squad qualifying time. Bryan O’Sullivan won gold in the U15 boys event, while Kate Kavanagh took gold in the U16 category. Niamh Melody claimed a silver in the same event
In the 200m breaststroke, there was a gold medal for Andrew Moore, while Cian Duffy claimed another gold in the 100m butterfly event. In the Open girls event, GSC bagged another gold with Sarah Jane Fox swimming to a gold medal finish in her 100m fly. Bryan O’Sullivan took a silver medal in the U15 event while Mitchell Wilson and Keena Walsh claimed bronze.
There was another silver for Bryan O’Sullivan in the 100m backstroke event while Kate Kavanagh swam to a bronze medal finish in her event. Both Kate and Bryan won silvers in the 50m backstroke event, while Kate Finn claimed bronze in the same event.
Finishing the event in fine style, the GSC cannon 500m freestyle relay team claimed the last gold of the day for the club. Congratulations to Ailbhe Mulhall, David Doorly, Roisin Finn, Max Kolcow, Nell Mahdi, Bryan O’Sullivan, Ruth Keogh, Andrew Moore, Keena Walsh and Kevin McGlade.
GSC would like to extend it’s thanks to the team staff for the meet: Coaches Pearse McGuigan and Ger Keogh and Team Mangers, Melita Walsh and Helen Duffy for their fantastic support to the team over a long day of competition.
