Galway Swimming Club taste success at Irish Nationals
Galway Swimming Club did not disappoint at the Irish Nationals, which were held at the NAC in Dublin on the 25th-28th April. The team put on fine performances, winning six National medals, breaking 12 Connacht records and setting 44PB’s.
There were also 11 finalist places for the team, 13 B finals/semi finals, 2 British Youth qualification times from Kate Kavanagh(100/200back) with David O’Sullivan qualifying for the European Juniors in the 200m butterfly.
As the main focus competition meet for the senior Galway SC athletes, the meet served many purposes for the team with personal bests and international meet qualification times being the aim for all the swimmers.
There were podium places for David O’Sullivan, who came 3rd in the 200 fly, breaking a Connacht Senior/Junior record and qualifying for the European Junior Championships. David also won silver in the 100 fly with another Connacht Senior/Junior record swim.
Keena Walsh came 3rd in the 400IM, with a Connacht Senior/Junior record, Kevin McGlade added to the Connacht Senior Records with a second place finish in the 50m freestyle while Dairne Ryan came 2nd in the 100 freestyle and Cian Duffy came 3rd in the 100m butterfly & in the heats of the 50 Backstroke Cian set a Conancht Junior & Senior record.
There were finalist places for Dairne Ryan in the 200 free, Bryan O’Sullivan and Ruth Keogh in the 800 free, David O’Sullivan in the 50 fly and a Connacht Senior/Junior record, Kate Finn in the 100 backstroke/50 free, Kate Kavanagh in the 100/200 backstroke with two British Youth QTs, Niamh Melody in the 50 back, Keena Walsh in the 200 IM and Dairne Ryan in the 50 free with a Connacht Senior record.
There were also ‘B’ finals/semi final finishes for Ruth Keogh (200 Free), Niamh Melody (100 back), Angela O’Connor (50 fly), Ellen Leahy, Keena Walsh and Ruth Keogh , Bryan O’Sullivan and Andrew Moore (400 free), Kate Finn (200 Back), Andrew Moore, Bryan O’Sullivan and Oisin Duffy (200IM), Ellen Leahy (200 Breast)
Galway SC would like to congratulate the swimmers on great individual and team performances, which bode well for the summer meet preparations.
