Galway SC make it lucky No.13 at the Youth & Senior Nationals!
At the third & final Irish National summer meet, the Irish Youth & Senior Nationals held in the NAC, Dublin from Thursday 12thth-Sunday 15th July, Galway SC finished off a long but successful season with some excellent individual & team performances at the National Championships.
The team of 13 swimmers achieved 33 PB’s, 15 finalists, 20 top three podium finishes which included 13 National Youth & Senior titles & set 4 new Connacht records (2 Senior & 2 Junior).
Top individual performances came from David O’Sullivan who won U16 National titles in the 200 & 400 Freestyle, 200 Butterfly & finished second in the 100 Freestyle & in U16 boys 1500 Freestyle event, Conor Smyth finished second in a PB time. Cian Duffy also won three titles in U18 category in the 100 & 200 Fly & 400 IM & in the Girls U15 Youth category there were National titles titles for Keena Walsh in the 100 Breaststroke & 200 IM & Ruth Keogh won the 400 IM & silver in the 200 IM.
The U16 Girls relay team comprising of Keena Walsh, Kate Finn, Alex McFarland & Ruth Keogh won National titles in the 4X100 & 4X200 Freestyle relays events in new Connacht U17 records & the relay team of Keena, Kate, Ruth & Katie McKnight finished second in the 4X100 Medley event.
Other excellent finalist performances in the Youth category came from Richard Murphy (200/400 IM & 100 Fly), Oisin Duffy (200Fly & 400IM), Emer Claffey (400IM), Kate Kavanagh (200Back) & Conor Smyth (200 & 400 Free).
In the Senior Open category, there were National titles for Kevin McGlade in the 100 Freestyle who also made the final in the 50 Freestyle & Dairne Ryan on a welcome return to Ireland from overseas won silvers in the 100 & 200 Freestyle. The GSC senior boys relay team made up of three Youth & one Senior swimmer challenged for top honours in the three relay events. The team made up of Kevin McGlade, David O’Sullivan, Conor Smyth & Cian Duffy won the 4X200 Freestyle relay & finished second in the 4X100 Freestyle & 4×100 Medley relays with the 4X200 & 4X100 Freestyle relays being new Connacht Senior records.
This brought to an end another successfully Irish Youth & Senior Nationals competition & also season for the club & Galway SC would like to congratulate all the competing swimmers on their fantastic achievements over a very successful weekend & year of swimming.
